Seven new sustainable hotels in Denmark
Opened in 2021, Denmark’s newest places to stay feature sustainability and convenience in equal measure.
Zoku Copenhagen
Certified B Corp Zoku has opened its first location outside the Netherlands in Copenhagen this May. The 160-room home-office hybrid hotel is designed for business travellers and long stay guests and is located on Amager Island, two metro stops from the city center. Key features include Hay designer interiors, an open co-working space and a compact events and meetings room area. Bedrooms are all set up with kitchens and offer a unique design allowing for a work space along with privacy for sleeping.
Bella Arena
Opened in June 2021, Copenhagen’s new 14,000 sqm multi-arena seats 7,000 and 8,600 standing guests and is the latest addition to Bella Center Copenhagen. The unique and sustainable arena is one of the largest in Northern Europe and has been designed for large congresses along with culture and sporting events. Built and operated with a 360-degree approach to sustainability, it uses a new material made from upcycled Carlsberg beer kegs and has obtained pre-qualification for DGBN Gold Certification.
Comfort Hotel Copenhagen Airport
Nordic Choice Hotels opened Comfort Hotel Copenhagen Airport, next to its Clarion Hotel, in May. With 66,000 sqm, 605 rooms, 33 meeting rooms and a huge conference room, it is a four-minute walk from the airport. The hotel itself is priced at a budget level and includes a gym, laundromat, playroom and bar. Its new conference centre, The Hangar, is Northern Europe’s largest conference centre attached to an airport. The 2,500-sqm space that can accommodate up to 2,150 people, 5 Cessna aircraft or 25 cars. All Nordic Choice Hotels are ISO 14001 certified.
Scandic Strandpark
Also conveniently located for Copenhagen Airport, Scandic Strandpark opened in May. The 357-roomed hotel is 12 minutes from the city centre and one stop from the airport by metro, and includes a sky bar, wellness spa area, fitness area and kayaks. Conference and business facilities include a 349 sqm ballroom and five meeting rooms, with a maximum capacity of 350 for meetings and conferences, and 240 for banquets. There are also 27 handicap-accessible rooms. Scandic is Denmark’s only Swan-label hotel chain, has charging stands for electric cars, and works with Too Good To Go on food waste.
Next House Copenhagen
Back in central Copenhagen, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group’s new Next House Copenhagen will open this summer on Bernstoffsgade, a stone’s throw from Tivoli Gardens and the harbourfront. The luxury hostel features 433 rooms split across double rooms, 4-bed dorms and 6-bed rooms, all with a private bathroom. It has a strong focus on sustainability, with DGNB certification, solar panels and hanging gardens inside and out. Additional features include a public area and lounge, a restaurant and bar plus self service kitchen for guests, a fitness and yoga studio, a private cinema and an indoor stadium for padel tennis, football and softball.
Book1 Aarhus
Book1 Aarhus is a new design hostel in a repurposed former public library building dating to 1934, and comes from the design-led boutique hotel chain Brøchner Hotels. Expect an elevated hostel experience in the 444-bed property, which includes larger dorms, private double rooms and four private hostel suites. Extras include laundry facilities, ping pong and a sauna. Brøchner Hotels’ sustainability features include 100% renewable energy use throughout all hotels, organic breakfasts and Green Key certification.
H27 CPH
First Hotel Copenhagen is reopening this summer as H27 CPH, right in the heart of central Copenhagen. The hotel has been redesigned with a strong focus on Danish design and a garden bar offering respite from busy urban life at its heart. All 200 rooms feature Danish design furniture from the 1950s and 60s, and the hotel is eco-friendly with a Green Key eco-label certification. In addition, the hotel offers rental bikes and uses sustainable Botanika products in-room.
